Ask Susan - Tip of the Month
September 2003

People often ask me if we need to "register" their website with the search engines. It is not necessary to register or submit your website to the search engines to be listed. While there are been several acquisitions in the search engine community, the basics for success have not changed.

Here are some important things you can do to increase your search engine rankings and bring in good traffic:

1) Add your website address to a "signature file" on your e-mail so that it appears at the bottom of every e-mail you send.

2) Look for related websites that may be willing to provide a link to your website. This is one of the primary ways that we have increased qualified traffic for our major clients. Simply write an e-mail to the contact on that website. Be specific to make it easy for them to comply. Tell them the file name of the page on their website where you would like the link to appear and the wording for that link. Make it consistent with other links on that page. If possible, include your most important key phrases in that link wording.

3) If you have written articles that have been published, get permission from the publisher and add them as a page on your website - be sure to give credit to the publication. These are often full of good key phrases that people will be searching for,

4) Submit the site to the Open Directory (dmoz.com). Use your best key phrases in the description and follow the instructions carefully.

These simple steps can improve your website ranking and increase the number of qualified visitors and customers.
