-- But I paid for a Yahoo Directory listing!

-- Glossary - ranking

There is big news in the search engine world so I'm sending you an extra "Tip" this month.

Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), the most popular search tool has changed their listings. They no longer separate the website listings that come from Yahoo's paid directory and the results from Google. What does this mean to you?

Big changes - what they mean to searchers
You will now see search results in Yahoo that are very similar to the listings in Google. Some of the listings will have better descriptions and some will not be as good.

Trying to promote your website

In trying to promote your website it is now even more important to get good rankings in Google. With a good ranking, your website listing will be seen by more Google users AND Yahoo users. users. Together, Yahoo and Google account for about 2/3 of the referrals to websites through search engines.
Some of my clients have great rankings in Google and are enjoying tremendous increases in Yahoo rankings overnight.

But I paid for a Yahoo Directory listing!
This is the big question. What about our paid directory listings and is it worth paying for a listing with the Yahoo Directory in the future?

According to Search Engine Watch, a directory listing in Yahoo helps the website rank well in Google. And Yahoo is now using the Google results mixed with their own. So the answer appears to be yes; it's probably good that you're in the Yahoo directory and it may be worth it in the future. I will be analyzing my clients' ranking data to figure out if it's worth submitting or resubmitting to the Yahoo directory.

Expect more changes
Expect more changes to the search engines in the near future. I will keep you up-to-date on the major changes.

Glossary - ranking

Your "ranking" is where your website listing (description) appears on the results page when someone searches on a key phrase in a search tool. For an example, type the name of your company in Yahoo.com, hit search, and where you appear in the list is your website ranking for that key phrase (your company name).
