Ask Susan - Tip of the Month
June 2005

How do you improve the rankings of your website in Google? Just ASK-SUSAN:
Last month we looked at soliciting links to not only improve rankings but also to receive more qualified visitors that are apt to become customers. This month we'll look at how to update your content, title and metatags to improve your rankings for your selected key phrases.

The metatags are what most people think of when they think of search engine optimization. They are important, but will not help your rankings without first developing the list of key phrases for your business and then doing the other tasks on the list.

Content first.
Search engines want to find and present the most relevant results for a search so that people will return and use that search engine again. By building an audience they can sell more advertising. The best way for the search engine to build a list of web pages that provide the desired information is for the search engines to "read" what is on the pages. This is why the content is so important.

Search engines can read text, they can not read what is in an image. Sometimes websites are built from an image with the text in the image so the designer has control over the way the site looks in different browsers and on different monitors. These graphics are not only slow to load on the screen, but the search engines can not tell what they say. Coding the site for text (in html) provide content that search engines can read.

In addition, the search engines are working on ways to read Flash content but to be safe, stick with text.

You have identified one key phrase for each of several pages on your site. You want to work this key phrases into the content. Lots of people have theories on key phrase density. I recommend that you write for your audience. Search engines are getting smarter all the time about understanding synonyms and other wording that mean the same thing as your key phrase and related concepts.

For detailed instructions on updating your website including the title and metatags, I recommend www.selfpromotion.com.

Next month we'll look at how to submit your website where it will make a difference!

Best Regards, Susan Hankins
