Ask Susan - Tip of the Month
January 2005

Lots of people want to know how to improve the ranking of their website in Google. I have a sure way to do that: just ASK-SUSAN:
  • Analyze your current rankings
  • Study your competitors websites

  • Key phrase research

  • Solicit valuable links to your website

  • Update content, title and metatags

  • Submit to portals, and directories
  • Analyze rankings and traffic data

  • Never forget improve
I will be teaching this, and more, at Central Oregon Community College in Redmond Oregon the Spring and Fall.

This month we'll look at Analyzing your current rankings.

It's pretty easy, although time consuming, to type in the words and phrases in the Google search bar and see where your website is listed. Is it #1 or #50? While you're there, notice where your competitors are ranked.

To save time and help build that list of key phrases, use Web Position Gold. You can download a 30 day trial version at www.webposition.com/order/trial.asp.

The "Reporter" (one of the tools) will help you build a list of keyphrases. You select the search engines and it automatically queries the search engines and determines your website's ranking for each key phrase.

A few words of caution. These queries place a load on the search engine servers so they are not too fond of automated ranking tools. I recommend that you:
  • Run the reporter in the evening when the load on the search engines is lower.
  • Do not check (do uncheck) "URL Verification"
  • Do not run this report more then once a month
Rumor has it that Google can, and does, ban websites who inundate the search engine with automated queries. It's not worth the risk.

So now you know what your current rankings are in Google. You can run this report for your competitor's websites at the same time to know where you stand.

For this task, you built a list of key phrases. There may be phrases that your future customers are typing in that you haven't even thought of. Next month we'll examine our competitors sites looking for valuable key phrase ideas.

Don't get discouraged if you don't rank well. You are on the right track.

Best Regards, Susan Hankins
