How do you improve the rankings of your website in Google? Just ASK-SUSAN:
Today we'll look at submitting your website to portals and directories

Many of my new clients tell me that they have been paying for automated search engine submission for their website and it has not produced any results. In general, automated submission will not help ranking and will sometimes provide your e-mail address to spammers.

Google's page about submission explains that it is not necessary to submit your website to Google to be included in their database.

There is a better way. Here are the three steps that will get your site listed in Google:

1. See if your website is already included in the Google data base. On google.com, search for
site: yourdomainname.com
.

2. If your site is not found, then submit your site to the Open Directory Project. It's free. Follow the instructions very carefully.

3. Get links to your website. Google follows links from other sites to find and index your site to include it in the Google database.

To get valuable links to your website, consider portals such as business.com and websites that are specific to your business. These links:
  • will help your site get indexed by Google
  • may help improve your Google rankings, and
  • may refer potential customers.
What is a portal? A Princeton site provides this definition: "portal site: a site that the owner positions as an entrance to other sites on the Internet."

How do you find good portals specific to your business? Search for your service or product and check the sites that are listed near the top. For example, the #1 listing for "real estate" is realtor.com. Many successful Realtors pay for a listing on this site and include a link to their own website.

When evaluating a portal:
  1. Does it look credible - will it attract the types of visitors you want?
  2. How do you get a listing on a this site?
  3. How much does it cost?
  4. How do you know if it is worth the cost? I recommend trying it for a limited period of time and checking your traffic logs to see how many visitors were referred by that site and what they do when they arrive at your site.
For more information about getting links to your website read this article. It is from 2003 and still valid except that Google no longer powers Yahoo.

For local business consider submitting to Google Local.

To get more pages indexed more quickly, consider Google Sitemaps.

Next month we'll look at analyzing search engine rankings and website traffic data to continue to improve results and attract more new customers, clients and sales.

Best Regards, Susan Hankins
